Welcome to Natural Family Wellness with Vanessa Allen, MD.  We provide a holistic integrative family medical approach to wellness using western and alternative medicine. We are pleased that you are considering our practice to coordinate your total medical care. You will receive the best care possible from our physician and office staff.

Dr. Allen successfully treats medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, acute care (URi, sore throat, colds), asthma, allergic rhinitis, depression, anxiety, back pain, dermatitis, headache, thyroid disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), vaginitis, menopause, obesity, and tobacco addictions.

We have programs to help you achieve optimal health, and to restore and maintain health. We focus on providing health care to persons age 5 and older, emphasizing health awareness and prevention. About Dr. Allen
Dr. Vanessa Allen received her medical degree from Howard University, College of Medicine in 1989 and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina.

After completing her residency in 1993, she developed a successful private group practice in Ft. Washington, Maryland before starting her own practice in Bowie, Maryland.

In her search for knowledge, Dr. Allen has moved beyond her training in traditional allopathic medicine to embrace integrative and alternative medicine.

She has continued her education in complementary and integrative medicine by completing course work with the University of Arizona department of Integrative Medicine chaired by Dr. Weil, and has studied and mentored with Dr. Akmal Muwwakkil who specializes in herbal and Chinese medicine. She has completed her studies in acupuncture at UCLA, Helms Institute, the leading center for physician training in acupuncture.

Dr. Allen has developed unique and individualized programs for weight loss that successfully assist patients in meeting their weight loss goals. In addition, she has experience with individualized treatment with bio-identical hormones for women’s health and anti-ageing. Dr. Allen believes in patient centered care and addresses healthy lifestyle issues focusing on nutrition, physical activity, mind-body approaches and spirituality. Her goal is to promote wellness and disease prevention that enables patients to increase control over and improve their health care.

Acupuncture
A method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve function by inserting needles with heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points. Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of pain, various medical conditions, and conditions related to tension, stress and emotional conditions.

Smoking Cessation
The use of acupuncture and behavior modification to decrease cravings and quit tobacco smoking.

Bio-Identical Hormones
Ideal for hormone adjustment for women as they enter menopause and for men as they start the ageing process. The hormones enhance and normalize male and female hormones. An assessment will include hormone measurement and recommendations with bio-identical hormone treatment if indicated.

Appointments
If you are new to our practice, please call to schedule an appointment or send an e-mail for appointment request for an evaluation. Please bring a list of all prescription medicines and vitamin supplements that you are currently taking with you to your appointment.

Telephone Calls to the Office
We welcome your telephone calls and encourage you to contact the office if you have any questions or concerns. If you have a question for your physician, we will most likely take a message and have him/her call you back during a break in her schedule or at the end of office hours. This allows the physician uninterrupted time with all patients.
If you need to make an appointment, our office staff will assist you in doing so. When calling for a sick visit, please call as early in the day as possible so that we can see you that day.

If you need to cancel an appointment, please call the office as soon as you are able. Twenty-four hours' notice is requested when possible; this allows us to offer the appointment time to another patient.

Test Results
Our office will call you with any significantly abnormal test results. For normal test results, a member of our staff will send a letter or postcard to inform you. If you wish to call the office for test results, you may do so during regular office hours. We will respond to your call as quickly as possible.

Prescription Refills
Please call during regularly scheduled office hours to request prescription refills. Do not wait until the last day of medication to call the office. This will ensure enough time for us to review your request and phone in the prescription if indicated.
When calling for a prescription refill, please have the name and phone number and fax number of your pharmacy available to give to our office staff.

Referrals
As your primary care office, we will coordinate all of your medical care. Please consult our office whenever you have questions about your health. We will be able to guide you regarding appropriate medical treatment. Your physician will also help you select the proper specialist and continue to coordinate your care with the consulting doctor. Many times, follow-up care can be provided through our office. However, if it is medically necessary for continuing care to be provided by a specialist, we will help arrange this for you. Please make sure that we are aware of any medications that a specialist prescribes for you.

Urgent Calls
A physician is on call at all times. If you have an urgent medical problem, call the office immediately. During scheduled office hours, provide your name and a description of the situation to the receptionist. When the office is closed, our answering service will take your call. Please indicate that you are calling regarding an urgent situation; the answering service will contact the physician immediately. A physician will guide you in your urgent care.

Emergency Care
What to do in an emergency: 
Seek care at the nearest emergency facility or dial 911 (if your area has emergency response service).
If a delay would not be detrimental to your health, call us first, if possible. If you are admitted to the hospital, have a friend or family member notify our office as soon as possible.
